Bulgaria is among the EU countries which generate big quantities of waste
Bulgaria ranks 5th in the EU in terms of waste generation, statistics of Eurostat shows. According to 2016 data, Bulgaria and Romania generate high quantities of waste per capita.
An average of 5 kilograms of waste per capital is generated in the EU, whereas in Bulgaria 17 kilograms of waste are generated per capita.
According to Eurostat, 36.4% of the waste is generated by the construction activities, 25.3% by the mining industry, 10% of the waste is generated by the rest of the production facilities and only 8.5% of the waste is generated by the households.
Bulgaria is among the 6 EU countries with high share of waste generated by mining activities and this country is also among the countries generating dangerous waste. Bulgaria is also among the countries which do not recycle their waste and dispose it in waste repositories.
